This latest model joins the successful fourth generation Jimny 3-door, bringing a new dimension to the world’s smallest authentic off-roader. Despite maintaining the width and height of its 3-door sibling, the 5-door version extends the length by 340 mm, resulting in a still compact total body length of 3,820 mm (3,985 mm including the spare wheel), and a wheelbase of 2,590 mm.
The interior of the 5-door Jimny has been significantly upgraded, with thicker and wider rear seats providing more comfort, and the luggage area more than doubling to 211 litres with the rear seats raised. When the seats are folded, the load area capacity increases to 332 litres. Practicality is further enhanced by features like a large side-opening rear door and multiple 12-volt power sockets.
Externally, the 5-door Jimny retains the distinctive styling cues of the 3-door but introduces a chrome and dark grey grille for a fresh look. The squarish lines, upright A-pillars, and a flat, square clamshell bonnet shape not only give it a unique appearance but also improve visibility and reduce blind spots. Roof drip rails help prevent water from dripping on passengers and facilitate the mounting of a roof carrier, making it even more versatile.
Off-road capability remains a hallmark of the Jimny, with the 5-door version equipped with Suzuki’s ALLGRIP PRO system, allowing drivers to select between 2WD, 4WD, and 4WD Low Lock. It features robust ladder frame underpinnings, a generous 210 mm ground clearance, and all-terrain tyres, ensuring it can handle rough terrains with ease. Hill descent control and hill hold control enhance its performance on challenging trails.
Under the hood, the Jimny 5-door is powered by a 1.5L 4-cylinder K15B engine, delivering 75 kW of power and 130 Nm of torque. This engine is both lightweight and fuel-efficient, with the manual model achieving a combined fuel consumption of 6.4 litres/100 km and the automatic version 6.9 litres/100 km. Despite its larger size, the 5-door remains lightweight, with a curb weight of 1,200 kg for the manual and 1,215 kg for the automatic model.
Inside, the Jimny 5-door boasts a larger 9-inch touchscreen with HD resolution, Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Safety features are plentiful, including dual camera brake support, rear parking sensors, and an autonomous emergency braking system. Additional luxuries such as a leather-covered tilt-adjustable steering wheel, climate control, and electric windows add to the overall driving experience.
Priced at $40,990 for the manual and $44,990 for the automatic, the Suzuki Jimny 5-door offers great value. It comes with a 3-year, 100,000 km warranty, an additional 2-year powertrain warranty, and a 5-year roadside assistance program. With its blend of rugged off-road capability, practical design, and modern amenities, the Jimny 5-door is poised to be a popular choice for adventurers in New Zealand.
